The Cold Moon 2026 is December's full moon and the last full moon of the year. It peaks on Wednesday, December 23, 2026, at 8:28 p.m. Eastern Time (01:28 UTC on December 24), two days after the winter solstice. It still looks full on Christmas Eve. Spiritually, it is a moon for rest, review and quiet gratitude.

This guide covers when to see it in your time zone, where the name comes from, what a full moon in Cancer is said to bring, and a short ritual for closing the year. If you worked with November's Beaver Moon ritual, the Cold Moon is the last step of the season: October was the harvest, November the storage, December the rest.

Cold Moon 2026 at a Glance: Date, Time and Meaning

The Cold Moon 2026 peaks on December 23 at 8:28 p.m. ET (01:28 UTC on December 24). It is the year's final full moon, in Cancer, and the best viewing is the evening of December 23 and Christmas Eve.

Moon sign Cancer (Sun in Capricorn)
Other names Long Night Moon, Moon Before Yule, Oak Moon, Christmas Moon

For North America the peak happens in the evening, so the moon is already up or rising when it turns full. Face east around sunset on December 23 and watch it climb. The Farmers' Almanac notes the moon looks full for about a day on either side of the peak, so Christmas Eve is just as good a night to step outside. A full moon this close to Christmas does not come every year; the Farmers' Almanac puts the next one on Christmas morning in 2034.

In short, the meaning people look for is seasonal and gentle: slow down, look back over the year, and keep only what you want to carry into the next one.

Why Is It Called the Cold Moon? Its Spiritual Meaning

The Cold Moon is named for the deep cold that settles over the Northern Hemisphere in December. Spiritually, it stands for rest, reflection and turning inward before a new year.

The name is a plain description. The Farmers' Almanac traces it to Algonquin-speaking peoples of the Northeast and to colonial almanac writers who borrowed it, and notes that Celtic tradition used the same idea. Other names point at the same season: the Long Night Moon, because it rises close to the longest night of the year, and the Moon Before Yule, because it comes just ahead of midwinter celebrations.

The spiritual reading follows the season. Nothing grows in December, and that is the point. Under this moon the useful question is not "what should I start?" but "what did this year teach me, and what am I done carrying?" It suits a slower kind of work: rest, sorting, and saying thank you.

With the full moon in Cancer, the focus falls on home, family and emotional safety. Many astrologers read a Cancer full moon as a time when feelings about belonging rise to the surface, which fits a week of family gatherings. Treat that as a prompt for reflection, not a forecast — the moon does not decide anything for you.

A Simple Cold Moon Ritual for the End of the Year (20 Minutes)

You do not need special tools. You need a warm, quiet corner, a notebook, and about twenty minutes on the evening of December 23 or 24.

  1. Settle (3 minutes). Sit by a window where you can see the moon, or simply light a candle. Breathe in for four counts and out for six, ten times.
  2. Look back (6 minutes). Write the three moments from this year you are most grateful for, and one lesson that cost you something to learn.
  3. Release (4 minutes). Write one worry, grudge or obligation you do not want to bring into the new year. Read it once, then fold the page away from you.
  4. Rest intention (4 minutes). Write two sentences in the present tense about how you want to feel in the first weeks of next year — rested, steady, clear. Feelings first; goals can wait for the new moon.
  5. Close (3 minutes). Say thank you to yourself and to one person who helped you this year. If you can, tell them.

If you want a place to keep those present-tense pages across the year, the Scripting Manifestation Interactive Journal walks you through daily scripting and keeps everything on your own device.

Cold Moon vs. Other Full Moon Rituals

Each full moon of the season carries a slightly different focus. Here is how the Cold Moon compares with its neighbors.

Lunar event Main focus Best practice Energy
Hunter's Moon (October) Harvest, release what is finished Release journaling Letting go
Beaver Moon (November) Protect and store what matters Inventory + scripting Securing
Cold Moon (December) Rest and review at year's end Gratitude list + release page Stillness
Lunar eclipse (Blood Moon) Sudden endings, shadow work Shadow journaling, no new starts Disruptive
New moon / solar eclipse Beginnings, intentions Intention setting Initiating

The rhythm is useful even if you do not follow astrology closely: release in October, secure in November, rest in December, then set new intentions with the first new moon of the year.

Using the Cold Moon to Close Your Year

The Cold Moon lands in the most crowded week of the year, so keep the practice small and repeatable rather than perfect.

A good year-end review has three parts: what happened, what it taught you, and what you will stop doing. Write them on one page on December 23 and leave it alone until the first new moon of January. Reading it again after a short rest usually shows you which lessons were real and which were just tiredness.

Is it a supermoon? Sources disagree: some almanac pages call it the last supermoon of 2026, others leave it off their supermoon lists. For your practice it makes no difference: the moon is bright, the nights are long, and the date is what matters.
